Skincare for Lymphoedema patients by Nicole Rentier

Why is skin care important with lymphoedema?

Skin care is of vital importance and should be stressed to each patient, even those with Stage 1 lymphoedema.

Main aims of a good skincare routine

To improve and maintain skin integrity by concentrating on

  • Protecting the skin
  • Preventing infection

Preventative skin care

  •  Gently wash skin and avoid soaps containing perfume, alcohol and detergents. Use oil-based natural soap i.e. aloe vera, evening primrose or starflower based soap with no synthetic ingredients if possible.
  •  Dry thoroughly especially in between fingers and toes.
  •  Moisturize with a bland cream (unperfumed) i.e.E45, at night and twice a day if possible.
  •  Take great care when cutting nails.
  •  Use high factor sunscreen (factor 15 or higher) to protect the swollen skin in sunny weather.
  •  Avoid insect bites - use insect repellent
  •  Avoid hot baths or saunas (and of course hot water).
  •  Use electric razor whilst shaving
  • Use rubber gloves and gardening gloves
  • If you feel generally unwell and think you may have Cellulitis, consult your Doctor immediately
  • Treat cuts and grazes as soon as possible - clean skin well and then apply an antiseptic solution
  • Don't use electric blankets or hot water bottles - apply extra clothing for heat and use thermal vests etc. Use body warmers and avoid sitting too close to a fire
  • Use thimble when sewing.
