Exercise

Exercise is a very important part of the treatment for your swollen limb.

There are 3 main aims of exercise;

1 It increases the drainage of fluid from the swollen limb by stimulating the muscles.
2. To maintain or improve joint mobility.
3. To improve posture.

Points to remember during exercise.
Hosiery or bandages should always be worn during exercise.
Movements should be slow, rhythmical, gentle and well controlled to improve muscle tone and improve joint mobility.
Specific exercises given by the clinic staff should be performed once or twice daily for the number of times suggested.
Handy Hint: Perform exercises whilst waiting for the kettle to boil.
Avoid over-exertion during exercise. Do not strain, or use heavyweights.
Avoid using your limbs in one position for a long time.

Recommended Activities
Swimming or exercise in water are excellent activities. You do not need to be able to swim.
Yoga and T’ai Chi are also very beneficial forms of gentle controlled exercise, which is also relaxing.
Cycling is also helpful for leg swelling , as long as it is not too strenuous. An exercise bike with low resistance can be useful in some instances.
